The Mariners look to avoid a sweep as the season grinds to a stop
These first two games of a hotly anticipated Yankees series have been bad, each in their own specifically cruel ways. Today Logan Gilbert will try to do what he’s done so often and reverse the downward spiral, while the offense will try to do what they’ve done so often and give him absolutely no help in his efforts.
Lineups:
Victor Robles was originally in today’s lineup but is a late scratch. Jorge Polanco will move to DH and Dylan Moore takes over at second base, batting eighth.

Today is Frasier Day (as a tie-in promotion for the Frasier reboot on Paramount+), and Peri Gilpin, who played Roz, will be throwing out the first pitch. Fun fact: did you know Roz (Gilpin) and Daphne (Jane Leeves) are real-life good friends? The two even ran a production company together at one time post-Frasier.
Today in Mariners history:
- 1982 – With Edwin Nunez, 19, pitching, and Orlando Mercado, 20, behind the plate, the Mariners fielded the youngest battery in the club’s history. Mercado’s first Major League hit, a grand slam, powered Nunez to his first ML victory in a 9-7 win vs. Texas. .
- 1988 – Named the AL Player of the Week for Sept. 12-18, Mike Moore was 2-0 in two starts with an ERA of .50. He recorded two complete games (a 2-hitter and a 5-hitter), a shutout, with 14 strikeouts and a walk.
- 2001 – Jamie Moyer sets a career-high with his 18th victory of the season in a 5-0 win vs. Anaheim.
- 2001 – With a 5-0 victory, Seattle clinches its third AL West Championship. Must be nice.
- 2021—Jake Bauers clubs 460-foot homer at Kansas City, the longest homer by a Mariner in the 2021 season.
