Mariners trim current roster to 56 players
Mariners GM Justin Hollander announced the next round of roster cuts for the Mariners this spring. The cuts bring the Mariners’ spring roster to 56 players: 37 rostered players, and 18 non-roster invites (as well as Jackson Kowar, who’s on the 60-day IL).
Reassigned to minor-league camp:
- RHP Adonis Medina
- RHP Luis F. Castillo
- LHP Jhonathan Díaz
- C Jacob Nottingham
- C Nick Raposo
- INF Michael Arroyo
Additionally, RHP Cody Bolton, who is on the 40-man, has been optioned to Tacoma. He joins RHPs Blas Castano and Hagen Danner, who were also optioned to Tacoma this weekend.
These players join the players who were re-assigned to minor-league camp on Saturday: INF Brock Rodden, and OFs Cade Marlowe, Spencer Packard, and Rhylan Thomas, all of whom project to be in Triple-A Tacoma next season. Additionally, lefty Josh Fleming was re-assigned to minor-league camp this weekend.
Most of today’s roster cuts also project to Triple-A Tacoma, with one notable exception. It’s surprising to see spring standout Michael Arroyo among the cuts, as Arroyo has been impressive in his time both playing with the big-league club and starring as leadoff man for Team Colombia in the WBC qualifiers. Arroyo is the first of the prospects to be reassigned—fellow young top prospects Lazaro Montes and Colt Emerson remain with the big-league club for now—but the Mariners’ spring infield is crowded, especially with Jorge Polanco coming back to the field.
Depending on the severity of the injury to Mitch Garver, who left today’s game after being hit on the hand with a pitch, either Raposo or Nottingham could find their way back into big-league camp, or the Mariners could choose to continue getting top prospect Harry Ford reps; Ford remains in big-league camp for now.
There are also two additions to note to the roster, both pitchers. Righty Trevor Gott is back in camp on a minor-league deal, although he won’t pitch this spring as he continues to rehab from TJ surgery. RHP Seth Martinez, a former Astro, is also a recent addition, claimed off waivers from Miami last week. Unlike Gott, Martinez does take up a roster spot; to make room for him, the Mariners moved Kowar to the 60-day IL.
