Are you ready for a weekly blast from the Seahawks teams of the past? You know you want to remember Kam Chancellor’s career night.
This will be a weekly article series throughout the season looking back on what happened for the Seattle Seahawks 40, 30, 20, and 10 years ago this week.
The 2004 playoff game was not fun but we need to talk about it anyway. The 2014 game, however? VERY fun!

Well this sucks. Earlier in the season, I mentioned how the 2004 St. Louis Rams were a major thorn in the side of the Seahawks. Now you see why.
The Rams got the ball first and drove right down the field with Marc Bulger finding Torry Holt for a 15-yard TD and the 7-0 lead. Matt Hasselbeck was intercepted by Travis Fisher on the Seahawks first offensive play of the game, giving the ball back to the Rams. Thankfully, Ken Hamlin picked off Bulger 2 plays later. The teams traded possessions until late in the 1st Quarter when Josh Brown kicked a 47-yard FG to make the score 7-3. St. Louis then went right down the field again with Marshall Faulk punching it in from 1 yard out to put the Seahawks down 14-3. Hasselbeck got the offense going and found Bobby Engram for a 19-yard TD to make the score 14-10, which is where it would still be at halftime.
Seattle took nearly half of the 3rd Quarter on their first drive after the half, coming away with a 30-yard FG to cut the deficit to 14-13. The Rams went on their own 6 minute drive and also got a FG, this one a 38-yarder from Jeff Wilkins to make the score 17-13. The Seahawks went right down the field, with Hasselbeck throwing a 23-yard TD pass to Darrell Jackson as Seattle had their first lead of the game at 20-17 early in the 4th Quarter. The Rams tied the game at 20-20 with a 27-yard FG by Wilkins. Seattle had to punt on their next drive and the Rams made them pay with a 17 yard TD pass from Marc Bulger to Cam Cleeland to put the Seahawks down 27-20 with just over 2 minutes left. No worries, the Seahawks drove all the way down STL 11 with 37 seconds remaining. After Hasselbeck was sacked by Jimmy Kennedy on 1st down, he threw an incomplete pass on 2nd down. Things were looking bleak with Seattle facing a 3rd and 16. Hasselbeck looked to “old reliable” Bobby Engram, who got 12 yards. Seattle had 4th and 4 from the STL 5. Hasselbeck once again targeted Engram in the end zone but he couldn’t reel the ball in. Seattle lost a heartbreaker 27-20.
Matt Hasselbeck was 27/43 for 341 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT. Shaun Alexander had 15 carries for 40 yards. Bobby Engram caught all 6 targets for 79 yards. Darrell Jackson had 12 catches for 128 yards and 1 TD.
Ken Hamlin had 1 INT. Chike Okeafor had 2.0 sacks. Chad Brown and Rocky Bernard had 1.0 sack each. Rocky Bernard and Craig Terrill shared a sack with 0.5 a piece.
Seattle finished the season at 9-8 with a bitter taste in their mouth. Would they finally be able to break through in 2005? I’m sure there’s nothing awful that happened at the end of that season, right?
Right??

After a good week of rest, the Seattle Seahawks hosted the Carolina Panthers in the 2014 Divisional Round. It’s quite fitting that Seattle ended up with 31 points in honor of a certain someone but we’ll get to that later.
It was the usual slugfest for these two teams until near the end of the 1st Quarter when Tony McDaniel recovered a Cam Newton fumble deep in Panthers territory to set up the Seahawks offense. They responded a few plays later with a 16-yard TD pass from Russell Wilson to Doug Baldwin to put Seattle up 7-0. Cam Newton led Carolina on their own scoring drive, capped off by a 7-yard TD pass from Newton to Kelvin Benjamin to tie the score at 7-7. Seattle wasted no time grabbing the lead back at 14-7 on a 63-yard TD pass from Wilson to Jermaine Kearse. The Panthers went on a long drive again but stalled out at the SEA 22 with 4 seconds left. They lined up for a FG and Kam Chancellor hurdled the middle of the Panthers line but somehow missed blocking the ball. No worries, there was a false start on Carolina so they moved back 5 yards for another FG attempt. Guess what? Bam Bam freaking did it again! However, he got called for running into the kicker even though it appeared Kam got a piece of the ball which should have negated the penalty. Got damn, Kam was such a cool player. Anyway, Gano converted a 35-yard FG for Carolina to make the score 14-10 at halftime.
Both teams were scoreless in the 3rd Quarter but Steven Hauschka nailed a 37-yard FG on the 1st play of the 4th Quarter to put Seattle up 17-10. Seattle’s defense forced a punt and their offense padded the lead on a 25-yard TD pass from Wilson to the other Willson (Luke) as the Seahawks took a 2 score lead at 24-10. Carolina got the ball and were driving inside the SEA red zone looking to get back into the game when Kam Chancellor stepped in front of a Newton pass, picked it off, and sent the fans in CenturyLink Field into a frenzy with a 90-yard interception return for a TD and the 31-10 lead. Carolina scored a meaningless TD with just under 3 minutes left on a 15 yard TD pass from Newton to Benjamin but the party was already on in Seattle. Their offense got a few first downs to ice the game and Seattle headed on to the NFC Championship game for the 2nd consecutive year!
Russell Wilson was 15/22 for 268 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT. Marshawn Lynch had 14 carries for 59 yards. Jermaine Kearse had 129 yards and 1 TD on just 3 catches.
Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor both had 1 INT with Kam’s being the game-sealing pick 6. Cliff Avril and Bruce Irvin each had 1.0 sack.
Honestly, I don’t know that I appreciated how damn good Kam was. Have a day Bam Bam!
As for the rest of the playoffs, it would be the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts facing off in the AFC Championship while the Green Bay Packers squeaked by the Dallas Cowboys because of a bogus call against Dez Bryant where he definitely caught the ball. As Packers fans will find out karma is a bi–. Too bad that karma will continue through with Seattle as well…
