The Seattle Seahawks released a recently signed quarterback on Wednesday.
Seattle cut Chevan Cordeiro, one of 16 undrafted free-agent signings announced last week.
Cordero spent four seasons at Hawaii before transferring to San Jose State in 2022. He amassed 6,024 passing yards, 43 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in two years with the Spartans, who won seven games each season.
After going undrafted, Cordero joined the Seahawks ahead of last weekend’s rookie minicamp. He auditioned for a role alongside quarterbacks Taulia Tagovailoa and Kory Curtis, who participated in the three-day minicamp as tryout players.
Following Cordero’s release, Geno Smith and Sam Howell are the only quarterbacks on Seattle’s roster.
Smith will return as the starter after throwing 20 touchdowns with a 92.1 quarterback rating last season. Seattle restructured the 33-year-old’s contract in February, clearing 2024 cap space by converting his $9.6 million roster bonus into a signing bonus.
In March, the Seahawks acquired Howell from the Washington Commanders in a deal involving swapped draft picks. The former fifth-rounder posted 21 passing touchdowns and 21 interceptions during his second season.
After the trade, head coach Mike Macdonald said he doesn’t anticipate a quarterback competition this season.
“l don’t. I’ve talked to Geno about it. Very confident in Geno. Geno’s going to be our starter,” Macdonald said in March. “Sam knows he’s going to be our backup, but Sam is a great young player, and he’s got a really bright future that we believe in.”
The Tacoma News Tribune‘s Gregg Bell wrote that all three quarterbacks were “way, way off on their throws” during Seattle’s rookie minicamp. He doesn’t expect Cordero, Tagovailoa, or Curtis to make a practice squad.
