It’s the fewest points the Seahawks have ever scored in a win.
The Seattle Seahawks have had 54 instances of failing to score a touchdown in either the regular season or the playoffs. This was one of those rare times where Seattle was able to come on top a winner.
In the electrifying season finale of Thursday Night Football, the Seahawks and Chicago Bears played to a 6-3 scoring explosion, with a burst of points so intense in the first half that both sides agreed that efforts to add to the point total were unnecessary in the second half. For the Seahawks, they made NFL history by clinching a winning record despite losing six home games, and it’s also just the third time they’ve ever won a game without getting into the end zone.
Don’t remember the other wins? Here, lemme help!
2001: Seattle Seahawks 9, Cleveland Browns 6
Rian Lindell outdueled Phil Dawson on opening day of the 2001 season. Lindell won the game with three seconds left on a 52-yard kick, which by 2001 NFL standards might as well have been an 80-yarder. Mike Holmgren opted to go for it on 4th and 1 from Cleveland’s 36 in order to both convert and get into closer field goal range, and the move paid off. Matt Hasselbeck was picked twice while Tim Couch was picked off once. Seattle got the ball near midfield with over two minutes left and traveled all of 19 yards in six plays for the winning drive.
2006: Seattle Seahawks 9, Detroit Lions 6
For some of our less tenured Seahawks fans, this was the first season after reaching the Super Bowl, and the NFL schedule makers put Seattle immediately at the site where it lost Super Bowl XL.
Just like in 2001, the scoring pattern was identical. Jason Hanson scored first, Josh Brown had the next two field goals, Hanson had the tying field goal, and Brown had the winner at the end. It was one of four game-winners by Josh Brown that season.
This was the first game after Steve Hutchinson left and the offensive line allowed five sacks of Matt Hasselbeck while Shaun Alexander and Mo Morris combined for under four yards per carry. The Lions finished the season 3-13 and 30th in points allowed.
Curiously enough, all three instances occurred on the road, and all of those Seahawks teams were 9-7 through 16 games. The 2001 Seahawks missed the playoffs because they needed losses by either the New York Jets or Baltimore Ravens in Week 17. The Jets beat the Oakland Raiders on a last-minute field goal (only to get bounced by the Raiders the following week in the Wild Card), while the Ravens won over the Minnesota Vikings on Monday.
The 2006 Seahawks backed into the playoffs after going from 8-4 to 8-7, but the division was so terrible that they clinched in Week 16 when the San Francisco 49ers lost at home to the Arizona Cardinals. Despite a slew of injuries and generally mediocre football, Seattle nearly reached the NFC Championship after a dramatic win over the Dallas Cowboys and then an overtime heartbreaker to the Chicago Bears.
The 2024 Seahawks’ story hasn’t been completely written yet since they have an extra game. It’s possible they’re eliminated this weekend due to other results, or they’re playing for the NFC West title next weekend against the Los Angeles Rams.
