The Seahawks go south for a quarterback in Round 2.
The mock drafts keep on coming, and there’s a new one from The Athletic that has the Seattle Seahawks taking a quarterback.
As you might expect, many of the early mock drafts for the Seahawks have them selecting either an offensive lineman or another interior defensive lineman. This one is a two-round mock draft, which has the Seahawks drafting national champion offensive lineman Donovan Jackson at No. 18.
Here’s the blurb on the guard-turned-tackle:
Perhaps no player elevated his stock throughout the College Football Playoff more than Jackson, who kicked to left tackle out of necessity and proved he could do that job just as capably as play guard. Jackson (6-4, 320) allowed zero sacks and just two pressures over his final eight games at left tackle.
We’ll have time to talk about Jackson throughout the next few months. I believe he’s easily one of the most promising offensive linemen in the entire draft class. From a Seahawks perspective, he could slot in at left guard and replace Laken Tomlinson, but don’t discount the potential to deputize for Charles Cross at left tackle… or replace him in 2026? Cross’ contract expires in 2025, barring any fifth-year option pickup. I think Cross is good enough to get another contract, but we’ve seen Seattle seldom re-sign its own draft picks along the offensive line under John Schneider.
The real reason you’re here is to find out which quarterback the Seahawks landed in the second round. Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders went off the board early, while Jalen Milroe went to the Tennessee Titans at No. 35 and Jaxson Dart to the New York Jets at No. 42. Who’s going to Seattle? None other than Texas’ Quinn Ewers.
The blurb on Ewers:
The Seahawks need to look to the future after a season that saw 34-year-old Geno Smith throw 15 interceptions and 21 touchdowns. Ewers is accurate and tough. Whether he’s NFL starting material remains to be seen, but he’s definitely worth taking a flier on 50 picks into the draft.
Ewers was impacted by injuries in his final season at Texas, missing a couple of games with an oblique strain. He still finished the season with 31 touchdowns to 12 interceptions and just under 3,500 yards passing on a 65.8% completion rate, but his performance split against ranked teams vs. unranked teams was very noticeable. At his best, Ewers was the Big XII Championship Game MVP in 2023, with Texas making it to the CFP semifinal and losing to the Washington Huskies.
Ewers was the No. 1 recruit out of high school when he committed to Texas, helping turn what was a powerhouse in decline to a championship contender again. There have been inconsistencies in his game with regards to decision making and his out of pocket mobility, but he’s far from talentless and will be considered at least a mid-round option.
Curiously, this mock draft had Louisville’s Tyler Shough going No. 52 to the Pittsburgh Steelers, which would be insanely high for someone who would be 26 years old in September. You’re looking at six quarterbacks in the first two rounds, which does not feel like a “weak QB class” as described.
