For the first time in over a decade, the Seattle Seahawks are in the market for a new head coach. They’ll be hard-pressed to find one capable of doing what their last one did.
Pete Carroll may have struggled in his last few years with the Seahawks, but he managed to lead the team to the playoffs with no fewer than three different starting quarterbacks and only one of whom was drafted under him. But he’ll undoubtedly be remembered for what he did with Russell Wilson as his quarterback and the “Legion of Boom” as his defense.
But reminding everyone of the Legion of Boom might be the direction the Seahawks go with in trying to keep fans excited for the future. It was, after all, the defense that did the heavy lifting in bringing the team to back-to-back Super Bowls between 2013 and 2014.
That’s why Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn seems like the natural pick to be the Seahawks’ next head coach. Quinn was, after all, the defensive coordinator of the Seahawks during those great years with the Legion of Boom defense. He then parlayed that success into a job with the Atlanta Falcons, leading them to the Super Bowl in just his second year at the helm.
Quinn’s experience both with the team and as a head coach makes him an obvious choice. His recent success in Dallas shows that he still knows how to coach up a defense.
As a result, Dan Quinn is who The Spun is predicting will be the choice.
But it’s not a move that’s set in stone. For starters, a hire like that feels like it should have happened already if it’s what the Seahawks really wanted to do.
Taking so long to make a move on Quinn could come back to bite them as six other teams have made hires and are already filling out their coaching staffs.
Maybe the Seahawks just want to do their due diligence with candidates from the teams that are still in postseason contention before coming to a decision. But we think Dan Quinn will ultimately get the job.
