Nobody saw this one coming but Pete Carroll is reportedly out as the Seahawks head coach, ending a 14-year run in the Pacific Northwest.
However, it doesn’t sound like the 72-year-old is gone for good. As Seattle announced Wednesday that Carroll will remain with the organization in an advisory role. Per team owner Jody Allen:
After thoughtful meetings and careful consideration for the best interest of the franchise, we have amicably agreed with Pete Carroll that his role evolve from Head Coach to remain with the organization as an advisor. … His expertise in leadership and building a championship culture will continue as an integral part of our organization moving forward. Pete will always be a beloved member of the Seahawks family.

Carroll brought the first Super Bowl to Seattle’s franchise with the Legion of Boom after building them from a 7-9 team to a perennial 10-win club and NFC contender.
It’s hard to imagine this being it for Carroll on an NFL sideline but for now it sounds like Pete is headed to the front office.
