Unlike the last two seasons, the Seahawks won’t have anyone up for an AP year-end award.
Unsurprisingly, the NFL Honors will not have any Seattle Seahawks presence for the Associated Press awards.
The finalists for Most Valuable Player, Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year, Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year, Comeback Player of the Year, Assistant Coach of the Year, and Coach of the Year were announced on Thursday. Unlike the past two seasons, Seahawks are nowhere to be found for any of these categories.
Last season the Seahawks had Devon Witherspoon finish fourth in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting, while 2022 saw Geno Smith win Comeback Player of the Year, Riq Woolen finish third in Defensive Rookie of the Year, and Kenneth Walker III voted as runner-up in Offensive Rookie of the Year.
There’s really no strong argument to be made for any Seahawks player to be included in the top five voting for the AP awards. MVP is out of the question, Offensive Player of the Year is a total non-debate, Defensive Player of the Year might have had a case for Leonard Williams but even that’s a hard sell, no one was in Comeback Player of the Year positioning, and Seattle’s rookie class wasn’t impactful enough to merit nominations on either side of the ball. Assistant Coach of the Year wasn’t happening on the basis of Seattle firing its offensive coordinator, while Mike Macdonald’s Coach of the Year case probably would’ve necessitated a few more wins and a playoff berth.
Oh well. No big deal. We may still see a Seahawks presence during NFL Honors night on Feb. 6 for the Walter Payton Man of the Year, for which Uchenna Nwosu is Seattle’s nominee. Otherwise, here’s the list of AP finalists for the 2024 regular season:
