There wasn’t anything eye-popping from Coach Macdonald at his media availability, but it’s still worth a watch.
Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald was hired a little bit too late to attend either the Senior Bowl or NFL Scouting Combine, but Macdonald’s attended both to begin his second season in Seattle.
If you were hoping for a juicy quote or something to raise your eyebrows, this is not the article for you. I already warned you in the Dek and yet you kept reading. That’s fine! We appreciate your patronage.
I suppose if you want something about DK Metcalf and his seemingly reduced involvement in the passing offense toward the back-end of the season, he addressed the importance of getting DK more involved moving forward.
“From my understanding, going into the Atlanta game, I think he was tops in the league in targets,” Macdonald said. “I’m not sure where the numbers were, but it’s that trend of focus we’ve got on the offense that we’re shooting for, and then to Jaxon’s credit — and DK not being 100 percent throughout the second, third quarter of the season — it speaks to Jaxon’s development. But we want to get the ball to DK, we want to make sure that he’s a focal point of our offense for sure.”
For the record, Metcalf was fifth in targets per Stathead, so close but exactly first. Metcalf did miss two games due to a knee injury and upon his Week 11 return he wasn’t even in the top 40 among all pass-catchers in total targets. There has been a bit of trade speculation given Metcalf has a year left on his deal, but nothing from the team indicates they’re going to move on. It’s a different story, however, regarding Tyler Lockett.
Macdonald also stressed the importance of Klint Kubiak’s hire along with several new assistants who’ve worked with him on other teams.
“I thought it was important for Klint to be able to work with guys that he has a prior relationship with,” Macdonald said. “Just having alignment on each side of the ball, having done it a couple times where you haven’t had those relationships, I understand that sometimes it’s difficult. And with this particular scheme, there’s a lot of nuances that kind of take the test of time to iron out all the details, so it’s not like we have to go back through steps one through whatever to get up and running.
“So I thought that was really important, but these guys are some of the best in the business too, so to be able to add great coaches to your staff, great experiences, different types of skill sets and thoughts and backgrounds I thought was important as well. So I felt like it was a great mix.”
