Kickers are really good at making field goals from 50+ yards these days.
The Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams got the most out of their kickers on Sunday.
Jason Myers banged home a 56-yard field goal for his ninth make from 50+ yards on the season, extending his Seahawks franchise record and his personal career-high after an outstanding year. On the other side, rookie kicker Joshua Karty had a career day, making a 58-yarder to end the first half and a 57-yarder to begin the second half.
The NFL on FOX broadcast’s research revealed that between Myers and Karty, this was the first game in NFL history to feature three made field goals from beyond 55 yards. That’s honestly a surprise given the prolific ability of modern NFL kickers, but nevertheless there’s a first time for everything.
Karty ends his regular season an impressive 6-of-7 from 50+ yards, while Myers was 9-of-12 with two of his misses from 60+ yards.
A begrudging tip of the cap to the Rams for seemingly finding their answer at kicker, and a major round of applause for Jason Myers after one of the best seasons of his career. Neither one of them cost a third-round pick like a certain kicker in Santa Clara, either.
