The Seattle Seahawks recently made a bold move by parting ways with offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb and quickly began their search for a replacement. According to head coach Mike Macdonald, the team is focusing more on external candidates rather than promoting from within. Reports indicate that three individuals will interview for the position, with no additional names emerging thus far.
The decision to bring in a new offensive coordinator signals Seattle’s intent to bring fresh ideas to their offensive strategy as they move on to next season.
A Look Inside the Seattle Seahawks Offensive Coordinator Search
Thomas Brown
Current position: Interim Head Coach, Chicago Bears
Thomas Brown underwent two promotions this season with the Bears. He was promoted from passing game coordinator to offensive coordinator when Shane Waldron was fired and then to interim head coach when Matt Eberflus was let go. While he has interviewed for the full-time head coaching position with Chicago, Brown will likely find himself in a new position in 2025.
As the Bears’ interim head coach, Brown went 1-4, earning a statement win against the Green Bay Packers in Week 18. Brown was previously the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers in 2023 during Bryce Young’s rookie season but the team struggled and went 2-15.
Klint Kubiak
Current position: Offensive Coordinator, New Orleans Saints
Klint Kubiak has over a decade of experience coaching in the NFL. He is the son of Gary Kubiak who was the head coach of the Houston Texans (2006-2013) and Denver Broncos (2015-2016) amongst other offensive positions. Kubiak has unfortunately been a part of three different coaching staffs who fired their head coach either mid-season or after the season ended. He was the offensive coordinator (his first at the position) for the Vikings in 2021 but was let go when head coach Mike Zimmer was fired. Kubiak was the passing game coordinator for the Broncos in 2022 and took over play-calling duties when Nathaniel Hackett was let go with two games remaining. Once again in 2024, Kubiak watched his head coach get fired mid-season when the Saints let Dennis Allen go.
Kubiak hasn’t had a ton of success either as a coordinator. The Saints’ offense was on fire the first two games of the 2024 season, earning a total of 91 points, but quickly became one of the worst offenses in the league after injuries took over.
Hank Fraley
Current position: Offensive Line, Detroit Lions
Hank Fraley is the only candidate that the Seahawks are interviewing who has no experience calling plays. Fralkey has only been a positional coach and has been with the Detroit Lions since 2018. NFL reporter Albert Breer said that Fraley has already been putting in extensive work if he were to become an offensive coordinator. He has already put together a list of names he would be interested in having as his passing game coordinator.
For now, the Seahawks will retain offensive line coach Scott Huff. However, last year was abysmal for the position group, and bringing on Fraley could significantly improve that, despite his lack of experience at play calling.
Note: This article will be updated if more candidates are announced.
