Admit it: After our beloved Washington State Cougars got walloped two weeks ago at Boise State, you had nightmares of the 2023 season. The similarities are there—four-game winning streak to open the season, then a rough one on the road. It’d sure be nice to avoid another six-game losing streak, I’ll say!
The Cougs are in Fresno for a battle with the Bulldogs. Fresno State will soon be a conference opponent, so you better get used to them and their stadium, which goes by the name of Valley Children’s Stadium. More important to Coug fans is the fact that the field is named for Jim Sweeney, former head coach at both Fresno State and Washington State.
The play on the field is what we’re all interested in, though. The Coug D will have its hands full, as the Bulldogs like to air it out to multiple receivers and the WSU defense is allowing 292 yards per game through the air, which is 128th in the nation (out of 134—yikes).
And don’t get me started on the defense’s tackling. Good thing for WSU that Fresno State ranks just 112th in the nation in rushing offense.
After dropping their season opener at Michigan, the Bulldogs ripped off three straight wins against FCS (and Pac-12 wannabe) Sacramento State, New Mexico State and New Mexico before getting thundered at UNLV.
This is also the Bulldogs’ get back game, and neither team wants to be the one to lose twice in a row. Talk about it here.
