Sailor Coug makes its first ever appearance on a helmet.
Over the past three seasons, we’ve seen a lot more variety in the helmet decals used by Washington State. The two Wazzu variations, the return of the classic Cougar script, and even last week when they mixed and matched their decals and facemask color to create a whole new look.
For this year’s homecoming, WSU did something never done before. The fan-favorite Sailor Coug logo will make its first ever appearance on a helmet.

I mean this is just gorgeous and I can’t believe it’s taken this long to finally give the ol Sailor Coug their time to shine.

The story of the sailor hat logos across college sports goes back to 1963 and Art Evans. Our favorite good brand, Homefield, has a great piece on some of the history of these logos.
With the new sailor hat logo, it will be the third brand new helmet dropped this season and the fourth never-worn before uniform set. This also marks the first time WSU has worn a combo twice in the same regular season since 2015.
Though the Sailor Coug logo is brand new, the classic gray lids in general carry a 15-8 record since 2017 and helmets with a crimson facemask are 33-21. The crimson jerseys enter at 24-9 and the gray pants are 11-5.
It would have been cool if WSU could have unveiled throwback jerseys to pair with this helmet, but it’s important to note that WSU didn’t unveil their new anthracite jerseys till the morning of the game. Will there be another surprise for the Cougar faithful on Homecoming weekend?
