Graduations are just about all wrapped up for WSU (the last one is today in Everett), and spring sports will soon wind down. That means it’s summer workout time for many WSU athletes and time for coaches to add to their rosters.
Jake Dickert did the latter this week, nabbing former four-star linebacker Wesley Steiner from Auburn. Steiner has one more year of eligibility (his COVID year), and brings plenty of experience from the SEC.
Steiner checks in at six feet, 245 pounds and hails from Warner Robins, Georgia. He’s appeared in 47 games in his career with 86 career tackles. His best season was his junior year in 2022 when he tallied 46 total tackles, including 31 solo.
The Cougs have been refilling the linebacker position the last year or more, and Steiner is the latest addition. He’ll join a group that includes redshirt sophomore Taariq Al-Uqdah, Kyle Thornton and transfers Parker McKenna (Portland State) and Keith Brown (Oregon), among others. Also waiting in wings is once-touted prospect Hudson Cedarland, another redshirt sophomore.
Steiner adds veteran experience and a familiarity with WSU defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Jeff Schmedding, who coached at Auburn in 2021 and 2022.
Make sure you get to know Steiner in this emotional mini-doc, where he talks about the death of his mom and working on his mental health. Grab your hankies:

It hasn’t been the easiest of seasons for WSU baseball, but the Cougs and ace Grant Taylor thundered the USC Trojans last night to open a three-game homestand.
