The Cougs are looking to finish the season strong
Washington State baseball is set to host Portland today at 3:05 in Pullman. The Cougs have had a disappointing season after a good start and are looking to finish the season strong as they prepare for the Pac-12 Tournament. This afternoon’s game will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
This past weekend, the Cougs hosted #6 Oregon State and lost the series 2-1. They kept all three games close as they dropped the first game 2-1 as their comeback was cut short in the 9th inning. On Saturday, the Cougs held a 10-2 lead heading into the 9th inning and held off the Beavs, who put up 7 runs in the final frame but would stop there as the Cougs won 10-9. On Sunday in the finale, the Beavs jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first inning and never allowed the Cougs to come back into the game and would go on to win 10-6.
The Pilots are coming off of a series sweep over San Francisco this past weekend. They outscored the Dons 24-8 over the three games and sit at 27-17 on the season.
Earlier this year, the two teams met up in Portland and the Pilots came away with a 3-2 win. The game was knotted up at 2 until the Pilots scored in the 7th inning to break the tie and would hold the Cougs off the rest of the game.
For the Pilots, we will likely see right handed pitcher Morgan Codron on the bump. He has a 1-1 record on the year in two starts. He has appeared in 13 games and has 24.2 innings pitched on the year. He holds a 5.47 ERA with 34 strikeouts, 16 walks, and has also tallied a save. He pitched one inning against the Cougs earlier this season and gave up a hit, a walk, and a strikeout.
According to Portland’s game notes, we will likely see Spencer Jones on the mound for the Cougs. The Cougs do not have any name released on their game notes currently, but Jones on the mound might be a bit of a stretch being that he pitched in all three games over the weekend. He currently has a 2-3 record in his 10 starts and 19 appearances while striking out 28 and walking 19 and has tallied a 7.71 ERA.
Following their game today, the Cougs will stay home and will begin a 3-game series against USC beginning on Friday at 6:00 pm. They will then play Saturday at 2:00 pm and then Sunday at noon. All three games against the Trojans will be televised on Pac-12 Networks. They will then hit the road and head to Eugene to take on Oregon next weekend to finish the regular season.
