The Cougar baseball team has hit a very rough patch with a third of the season left
The Washington State baseball team has really hit a rough patch over the past few weeks and this past weekend was no better. The Cougs dropped all three games against California over the weekend making them 1-8 over their last 9 games.
After losing to Gonzaga last Wednesday 22-7 on the road, the Cougs returned home Friday and could not pull out the comeback in a 4-3 loss. Trailing 4-1 heading into the 9th, the Cougs had the tying run on second with 2-outs but couldn’t advance him any more as they struck out to end the game.
Saturday saw the Cougs head into the 9th inning trailing 3-2 before Cal absolutely exploded for a 10-run inning and would go on to win 13-5. While a 10-run inning typically leads to a loss, there was a controversial call in the 8th inning that gave Cal the lead. With runners on the corners, a groundball to the pitcher led to a rundown with the runner from third. He would then drop his shoulder and take out the Cougar catcher. The call on the field was that the Cal runner was out and ejected but after a review, the call on the field was reversed with the Cougs being called for obstruction and Cal given the run to take the lead.
Sunday did not have the controversy or the fireworks, but the Bears would go on to win 8-2 as they scored runs slowly throughout the game.
The Cougs will head to Arizona to take on Grand Canyon on Wednesday at 7:00 pm. They will then stay in Arizona for a three game series against the Wildcats in Tucson that begins on Friday at 6:00 pm. Those three games will be televised on the University of Arizona’s website.
