Washington’s football team lost head coach Kalen DeBoer to Alabama this Friday, but it wasn’t for the lack of trying.
According to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports, Washington spent two months working on a new contract for DeBoer. Clearly, the school knew there would be teams pursuing him at some point this offseason.
The last offer DeBoer received from Washington was around $9 million per year. The Huskies were reportedly willing to give him a seven-year contract.
Despite receiving such a lucrative offer, DeBoer decided to accept the Alabama job.
“DeBoer’s decision – whenever he makes it final – will be about more than money,” Dellenger said.
Washington officials spent more than two months in discussions with representatives for DeBoer on a new contract.
The last offer stood at $9+ million a year for 7 years, sources tell @YahooSports. DeBoer’s decision – whenever he makes it final – will be about more than money.

Even though DeBoer’s decision wasn’t about the money, Alabama will pay him well for the 2024 season.
Dellenger reported that DeBoer will most likely receive at least $10 million per year from the Crimson Tide.
“With Kalen DeBoer’s move final, Alabama owes Washington about $12 million in buyout money,” Dellenger said. “That, combined with DeBoer’s likely $10M+ salary, makes this an incredibly expensive move from the Crimson Tide – a commitment of near or over $100 million.”
Will DeBoer have success as Nick Saban’s replacement? Only time will tell.
