Washington is going to have a new men’s basketball coach for next season.
Per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Washington has informed head coach Mike Hopkins that he will not be returning for the 2024-25 season. He will coach the team in the Pac-12 tournament and whatever comes after that but will not be back for next year.
His buyout is only $3.1 million, which isn’t terrible for the school.
Hopkins has been the head coach of the program for the last six seasons but has only led the team to the NCAA Tournament once. That came in 2018-19 when Washington finished with a 27-9 record.
Since then, the program has been stuck in the mud and hasn’t been able to get back to that level.
Right now, the Huskies are 17-14 and just wrapped up the regular season with a win against the Washington State Cougars.
They’ll now head into the Pac-12 Tournament trying to string a win or two together to see if they can make the NIT since a bid for the NCAA Tournament is out of reach unless they win the conference tournament.
The Pac-12 Tournament will get going next week.
