Washington head coach Jedd Fisch brought over a number of his assistants from the University of Arizona when he was hired by the Huskies. But he has also added a number of sons of well-known NFL coaches and executives to boot.
Earlier today, Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report reported that the Huskies have hired Jake Lynch – son of San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch – as one of their graduate assistants.
Schultz noted that Lynch is now the fourth member of Fisch’s staff to be the son of a well-known NFL personality. His defensive coordinator is Steve Belichick – son of six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick; his offensive coordinator and offensive line coach is Brennan Carroll, son of former Seahawks and USC head coach Pete Carroll; one of his new offensive analysts is Luke Del Rio, son of former Pro Bowl linebacker and 12-year head coaching veteran Jack Del Rio.
The presence of so many NFL sons has led a number of fans in the replies to Schultz calling it a series of “nepotism” hires.
But while there is plenty of criticism to go around, it’s not like most of the don’t have experience as coaches.
Brennan Carroll has two decades of coaching experience and has spent the last three years as Fisch’s offensive coordinator in Arizona.
Steve Belichick has a decade of experience working for his father in New England and is a former player in his own right.
Del Rio played quarterback for the Florida Gators and Lynch was a linebacker at Stanford.
It’s not like these guys have been laying around on their couch all day playing video games just waiting for their dads to give the an allowance.
That said, there could be a lot of criticism of some of these hires if the Huskies don’t get results.
