This comes as no surprise to the Gonzaga fanbase.

As he should be, assistant coach Brian Michaelson will replace Mark Few as Gonzaga’s head coach whenever he decides to retire. Hopefully that won’t be for a while but Michaelson is the only right answer for the job.

This comes straight from the mouth of Mark Few when speaking with Jon Rothstein on the College Hoops Today podcast. Again, Mark Few has no plans to call it quits anytime soon. At least not before he wins that coveted national championship.

Mark Few spoke with Dan Dickau on the Gonzaga Nation podcast and only had high praise for the long time assistant. “He’s experienced. He’s a great recruiter. He has great relationships with our players. He understands the whole thing.”

Michaelson has lived and breathed Gonzaga basketball for the majority of his career. He was a walk-on from 2001-2004 until he was awarded a scholarship and named the 2004-2005 team’s co-captain in his senior season. He then moved up Gonzaga’s administrative/coaching ranks and won the respect of Mark Few (administrative assistant from 2008-2011, Gonzaga’s Director of Basketball Operations from 2011-2013, Gonzaga assistant coach from 2013 to the present).

This is a home run replacement for the legend that is Mark Few given Michaelson’s experience under his regime. Tommy Lloyd was the previous choice to replace Few but Arizona snagged him up. Hopefully no other convincing offers in college basketball end up to poaching Michaelson.
